I love the name ‘Refuweegee’ because Glasgow welcomes everyone, especially those who are struggling and new to the city. The theme of the piece is about the old and the new and how styles change but human behaviour has common traits in every generation and century. However there is a hope and awareness dissolving old ignorance and embracing inclusivity. As one of the narratives says, ‘We’re all Jock Tamson’s Bairns’!

Decoupage techniques with black gesso.

This was 4 weeks in the making but I have been thinking of this one for several years. It is a comment on single use plastics and the danger to the earth they are causing. I have used recycled plastic beads (the clear ones from recycled ocean plastic), reclaimed wood and a reclaimed frame. The montage words have been thoughtfully chosen and even include a recycled plastic wrapper made from potato starch which arrived in the post covering a magazine just towards the end of completing the piece.

I have always loved Peacocks but was brought up with the superstition that they (or the feathers in the house) were unlucky. Being attracted to the beautiful colours I did some research and found that the superstition probably came from the 'eye' in the feathers but in some cultures this is seen as protection from 'the evil eye' and good luck. I prefer this 'explanation' - 'Stunning in its beauty, the peacock is considered the manifestation of the celestial phoenix on earth'
